Facebook started notifying Page admins that the popular 'Reviews' app will be removed on Halloween (boo?). They say the change is important to "making pages better" and encouraging "conversation and feedback ...through posts and comments". Uh, okay...
On one hand, this is very disappointing news. For one, it pisses off Page admins and sends businesses and social media consultants scrambling to keep up anytime Facebook changes anything about Pages. It usually takes some time to determine the best way to use any social tool for business. So, after helping several of our clients spread good word-of-mouth integrating reviews into their social media strategy, it's disorienting and unhelpful to lose that feature with no apparent way of exporting or archiving past reviews.
But, on the other hand, this change could very well be a move for the better. First, it's a big deal Facebook even bothered to notify admins in advance. So, we know something must be up because Facebook got nice all of a sudden. Second, the application itself hasn't been properly maintained for years and the app often functions improperly or even disappears. Third, it's next to impossible to remove any Review – even if it's spam or half-finished and submitted by mistake.
So, what will this announcement mean? Our guess is that Facebook is developing a beefed-up review feature for Pages with full administrative controls, deep social reach, and developer's embed code for external sites. That would be "making pages better."
